Location: Somerset - Commutable from Bristol
Working Pattern: Hybrid (2-3 days on-site)
Day Rate: Competitive (Inside IR35)
Contract Length: Initial 6 months (with potential extension)
Security Clearance: SC Clearance preferred
We are looking for an experienced Oracle Database Administrator to join a prestigious central government agency sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. This is a senior hands-on contract role with responsibility for managing and supporting complex Oracle environments across both on-premise and cloud platforms.
You will take the technical lead for Oracle Database operations and design, driving performance, resilience, and secure service delivery across a highly available, mission-critical digital infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer, support and optimise Oracle 19c databases, including Dataguard, RMAN, and OEM Grid Control.
- Manage Oracle environments across Development, Test, and Live, including both cloud and on-premises deployments.
- Deliver high-quality technical support and incident resolution (3rd line), including deep-dive troubleshooting and performance tuning.
- Ensure business continuity through robust backup, recovery, high availability, and replication strategies.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, and security teams to maintain database compliance and operational excellence.
- Engage with project teams to support database architecture, security, and resilience in new initiatives.
- Maintain technical documentation and mentor junior staff to ensure knowledge transfer and consistency.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong hands-on experience with Oracle 19c, particularly in complex enterprise environments.
- Proficient in Dataguard, RMAN, and OEM Grid Control.
- Experience supporting Oracle databases on Windows platforms.
- Solid experience with performance analysis, tuning, and troubleshooting of Oracle platforms.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies (Azure or AWS) related to database hosting and management.
- Understanding of IT security best practices, particularly in regulated or government environments.
- Strong communication skills, able to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable:
- SC Clearance preferred (or eligibility to obtain it).
- Exposure to SQL Server and Postgres.
- Experience in central government, defence, or similarly secure environments.
- Knowledge of MOD standards and IT assurance processes.
