Role

As the Weapons and Gun Engineer you will work in the Weapons Science group which is part of Applied Science. Within Weapons Science, our teams come from a variety of engineering backgrounds as well as physics, chemistry and mathematics. They are critical to research, advice and the assessment of weapons systems from long range missiles to small arms pistols including the detailed technologies that enable their use. This particular role involves conducting evaluation and assessment of weapon systems, such as small arms ammunition or grenades, through qualification trials. The role holder will also support acquiring data through firing trials supporting research and development activities of explosive materials and systems.

Part if your role is to provide individual contribution to technical teams to ensure that programmes are delivered effectively and meet customer requirements and expectations.

You will also liaise with colleagues to ensure delivery on time and to budget.

Writing specifications for trials, the role will be both office and Trials based.

Ensure that customer's requirements and tasks are fully understood and that the problems and issues are identified at the outset.

Encourage an open and honest business assurance culture, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Experience/Qualifications required

You must hold a degree or apprenticeship in Science or Engineering, or an equivalent, nationally recognised, professional qualification. Mechanical Engineering is desirable.

In lieu of the educational qualifier, would typically have over six years relevant technical support experience.

Demonstrated key skills by working with ordnance or weapon systems is desirable.

Strong behavioural requirements including good interpersonal, analytical and team working skills, good oral communication skills and personal resilience to handle competing demands and setbacks.

Full training in Weapon Systems and Explosives will be provided if required.
