Technical Manager - Underwater Acoustics



A large Defence and Engineering Company have a unique opportunity within their business providing underwater radiated acoustic noise signature measurement, analysis, interpretation and knowledge to the Royal Navy.

The Technical Manager's responsibility is to technically manage the underwater radiated noise signature and noise ranging capability, which includes acting as the lead for all technical underwater radiated noise signature and noise ranging related activities.


  • Technically assure all underwater radiated noise and noise ranging-related work and outputs, including all radiated noise, and associated acoustic signature, customer deliverables and reports.
  • Increase the standard of the technical output and focus of the associated customer deliverables and reports, producing focused deliverables to a high technical standard in order to support the navy in providing an operational advantage.
  • Technically act as the customer for all current and future noise ranging-related Investment Projects, including the following responsibilities:
    • Provide scientific and engineering expertise, in the form of consultancy, during definition and development phases of individual projects, to include setting requirements, contributing to the development and application of new processing techniques, methodologies and improved analysis tools, and defining test procedures.
    • Working closely with the investments teams, lead the integration and implementation of new technology into the T&E delivery service for noise ranging.
  • Lead, from a technical perspective, all underwater radiated noise signature interaction with the various MoD customers and wider stakeholder community.
  • Technically manage, lead and support all noise ranging bids to grow the noise ranging business, including the underpinning T&E delivery contract.


  • A first degree in a nationally recognised Science or Engineering discipline.
  • Ten years or more experience in the science of underwater acoustics, with wide a portfolio of experience, and considered a Subject Matter Expert in the discipline with a record of research and academic achievement.
  • A demonstrable understanding and interest in underwater radiated acoustic noise signatures.
  • Proven skills in the areas of technical assurance, numerical analysis, reporting and technical leadership.
  • Substantive knowledge of, and recognition within, the underwater radiated noise signatures customer base, including MoD and the wider stakeholder community.
  • Paramount, to strive for scientific integrity and technical excellence at all times.
