Shift Manager

My clients is seeking to recruit a Permanent Shift Manager to support its Operations team. The Shift Manager is responsible for the management of activities across all Manufacturing plants on a 24/7 basis. In addition, the Shift Manager is responsible for site operations outside of normal office hours working closely with the Operations and Process Leads to ensure that operational goals are achieved.

Reporting to the Operations Lead, key responsibilities of the Shift Manager include:

  • Managing day to day operations on shift ensuring functional area targets, objectives and performance criteria are understood and met
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment is operating in a compliant manner and that all activities are conducted to meet GMP regulations, site and corporate quality standards and any additional regulatory requirements as required
  • Responsibility for schedule adherence metric on shift; driving performance to ensure throughput and changeover targets are met.
  • Providing technical support to the plants and prioritising tasks and assigning resources accordingly.
  • Manning levels and management of personnel assigned to the shift including supervision on a day to day basis, training and communications, assignment and prioritization of work, delivery of objectives and performance management including development of direct reports.
  • Shift personnel will continue to have work allocated by their line manager, however, out of hours, the Shift Manager will support shift personnel and can re-prioritise work across the site if required.
  • Supporting technical transfer activities
  • Responsibility for emergency procedures, safety systems, safety performance, communication and behaviours on the shift
  • Performing safety audits and walk downs, raising change controls and emergency change controls
  • Reporting and leading the investigation of safety or environmental incidents on the shift
  • Championing OPEX activities on the shift
  • Working cross-functionally and across shifts to resolve issues and drive improvements
  • Overall responsibility for the site out of hours and providing assistance and/or support to Manufacturing, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Technical Services or other colleagues as requested


  • Suitable candidates should have at least
  • Six years' experience in a direct manufacturing support role
  • Qualified to Honors Degree level in a science, chemical engineering or related subject.
  • OPEX/Lean six sigma yellow belt qualification or equivalent.
  • A thorough understanding of bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing, plant operations and engineering projects is essential along with excellent leadership skills with a proven track record in cross-functional people management, and the ability to be flexible to adapt to a changing business.
