Senior User Researcher


We have a fantastic opportunity for a User Researcher to join the Home Office in Croydon on a permanent basis. You will be part of a fast-paced delivery team, working on a wide variety of digital projects. You will be responsible for the overall research strategy and test design, using techniques such as guerrilla testing, paper prototyping and rapid analysis, communicating your findings to the wider team. A passionate advocate for user experience, you will liaise with stakeholders and delivery teams to helps drive forward your vision. As a senior researcher, you will also carry out line management, mentoring, and training activities for more junior staff.

You'll be an expert user researcher with extensive experience of using a variety of methodologies and proven ability to:

  • apply user-centred service design and delivery practices and put users first in a government context
  • choose appropriate methods for different life cycle phases and situations
  • engage the whole multi-disciplinary team with a good research process, and involve teams in analysis to increase consensus and challenge assumptions
  • research diverse audiences to create accessible digital services
  • convince stakeholders to take a user-centred approach, based on evidence
  • understand the wider implications and long term impact of business issues and activities


  • experience of growing skills in team members, supervising the work of others, helping coach other researchers
  • a degree in HCI/Usability/Cognitive Psychology/Anthropology/Human Sciences or related field, and/or relevant industry experience
