Senior Software Engineer - Role D

As a Senior Software Engineer you will be working in the Glasgow Power, Energy & Cooling (GPEC) team to help deliver on BT's Corporate Social Responsibility by experiencing the full systems development life cycle with regards to various energy-related software programmes.

You will be leading smaller areas of such projects delivering across the full stack of back-end, front-end and database/infrastructure services which save energy, produce software to interact with IoT devices across BT's estate, and produce MIS systems that utilise these interactions to influence and aid key stakeholder decisions.

  • At least 4 years of professional (or higher) experience as a software engineer
  • Proficient analysis/knowledge of an object-oriented language - Java 8 or higher preferred
  • Robust design skills including, but not limited to, architecture and component designs adhering to industry standard design patterns
  • Experience of frameworks such as Spring, Spring Boot, JUnit
  • Strong evidence of test automation and experience of using a TDD approach
  • Familiarity with relational database concepts - Oracle database preferred
  • Experience of working with and building REST APIs (either through Spring MVC or Jersey)
  • Demonstrate the ability to make necessary strategic decisions behind owning components
  • Demonstrable evidence of team working, mentoring, supporting and sharing knowledge with team members
  • An interest in continual optimisation with regards to technologies or processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders (customers, other development/ design/support teams, suppliers, development partners)
  • May be required to take up Agile/Scrum lead role for smaller projects over a few releases
  • Experience in understanding and applying knowledge from lengthy 3rd party technical/regulatory documentation


  • Experience of integration with hardware connectivity over serial RS232/RS485
  • Experience of integration using protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, SNMP
  • Knowledge/experience of Power, Cooling and Energy domain
  • Familiarity with designing and developing for Cloud and DevOps tools and processes.
  • A degree or equivalent in a Computer Science related role
  • Experience with tools such as CI tools, Maven, Git, SonarQube, Kibana
  • Experience with Java Servlet containers such as WebLogic
  • Experience with managing small (<5 person) teams of junior developers in an agile manner
  • Shell scripting experience
