Role Purpose

The central responsibility of this role is for delivering excellent, scalable testing capability and providing overall direction and management of software testing, while ensuring that technology standards are defined and followed to meet users' needs efficiently and reliably.

You will perform gap analysis on current testing processes, competencies and capacity and implement plans to remove identified gaps, while keeping abreast of new technology patterns and trends to lead the evolution of test standards, tools and processes.

The focus will be on building in quality from the start and testing throughout development phases.

Main Duties

  • Managing all test processes, including test plans, resources, costs, timescales, test deliverables and traceability.
  • Coordinating, managing and communicating the planning of the system and/or acceptance tests within a development or integration project / programme.
  • Ensuring that automated tests are written with the same care and accuracy as production code
  • Identifying process improvements, and contributes to corporate testing standards and definition of best practice
  • Ensuring that there are no unpleasant surprises in latter stages of software development
  • Building tests to a standard that allows multiple use
  • Reviewing test results and modify tests if necessary
  • Serving as coach and mentor to individuals in the service assurance team to ensure that the team is appropriately trained and up to speed regarding methodologies, policies and tools.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in testing within a large-scale ICT estate, including integrating new and legacy products.
  • An ability to analyse & communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience, pro-active sharing attitudes
  • Experience with Non Functional Testing which includes: performance, scalability and operational acceptance testing.
  • Experience with tooling, and tool selection, for both Functional and Non-functional Testing (e.g. Selenium, jMeter)
  • Promoting continuous improvements and effective use of Agile practices, for example experience of one or more from peer review, test driven development, automated build & test.
  • Ability to quickly research and learn new tools and techniques; can learn by proof of concepts and iteration
  • Experience testing server-side web applications and working knowledge of at least one programming language (we use a range of languages including Ruby, Java, Python, JavaScript, Scala and Go) or detailed understanding and experience of front-end web development (PHP/CSS/HTML)
  • Ability to mentor and coach other QA & testing resources.
