Full Stack Ruby-on-Rails Developer

Would you like to join a major British multinational retailer with headquarters in Westminster, London that specialises in selling high quality clothing, home products and food products? Listed on the London Stock Exchange our client are looking for a passionate contract Full-Stack Developer (Ruby-on-Rails) to help design, develop and deploy software for our solutions for a new production team. The successful candidate will be able to build high-quality, innovative and fully performant software in compliance with best practise coding standards and technical design.

Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Collaboratively solves problems; communicates technical decisions through tech-talks and white-boarding sessions
  • Shows engagement when architecting and developing new software
  • Able to work completely autonomously on complicated problems
  • Understands system design and solution architecture enough to be able to show real examples of contributing to the general system design of the product
  • Constructive, critical thinker, who, when collaborating with other engineers, will always propose improvements to our systems
  • Helps other engineers to produce clean, quality code through strong engagement in code reviews and pair programming
  • Takes full ownership of the tasks in their backlog and is also beginning to show signs of taking accountability for the entire team's backlog
  • Actively engages with the product teams to make the product better, and to understand ambiguous requirements
  • Seen as helpful, by both engineers and product
  • Strong system design skills. Must have experience designing non-trivial systems, composed of multiple discrete components, and understand the main challenges and bottlenecks when designing systems at scale
  • Consults business stakeholders on the best approach for delivering complicated feature, both in how it can be split and sequenced, and in terms of potential improvement to the functional requirements
  • Knows when to challenge the team to be pragmatic
  • Helps team to continuously improve by reviewing processes and practices
  • Persistent in the face of blockers; requires minimal direction and oversight
  • Keeps up with the wider industry and proposes new technologies

Key Skills

  • Experience across the stack, have solved problems ranging from the front end, to the backend
  • Ruby on Rails with strong ORM and ActiveRecord experience
  • React, Redux, Styled components, React Router, Rxjs, Apollo and Graphql
  • Postgresql, Redis, Elasticsearch, MongoDB
  • Experience developing REST, GraphQL or gRPC based microservices
  • Understands the DD's: TDD, BDD and ATDD. Strong understanding of software testing in general, understands the differences between unit, integration and acceptance testing
  • Expert understanding and practice of building event driven, service oriented, microservice architecture
  • Expert understanding of software architecture and design principles (e.g. OO, DRY, SOLID)
  • Good understanding of functional programming.
  • Experienced working within a cloud environment, and is comfortable provisioning IaaS and PaaS service
  • Have delivered end-to-end web-applications within a product team following the DevOps methodology
  • Experience working within an Agile environment such as Scrum or Kanban
  • Strong understanding of containerisation (preferably Kubernetes)
  • Experience with distributed version controls systems like Git and appropriate workflows
  • Experience with pair programming
  • Experience working with CI tools (Concourse)
