ROBOTICS SPECIALIST

With 3 customer-funded projects already underway and another 11 in the pipeline, a Leading Defence and Security Company looking to expand by adding a Robotics Specialist.

The Land Autonomy Team has secured a number of customer-funded projects, with more in immediate pipeline. While different in some aspects, all projects share a number of common requirements, specifically having an autonomous ground vehicle platform with following capabilities:

Navigating autonomously while executing intelligent obstacle avoidance and route re planning in conditions of unreliable/denied network communication

Carrying out goal-based tasking (for example, "on arrival to Location A, locate a pallet marked with specified QR symbol, manoeuvre the vehicle next to the pallet, use auto loader to pick it up and place on the loading platform")

Land Autonomy Team uses a matrix management structure - each member of the team is expected to have his/her own principal area of expertise and responsibility, but also to contribute to and/or lead on bidding and delivery of customer solutions.

The team's principal lab, software development and hardware manufacturing/fitting facilities are located in Farnborough which is expected to be the home location. Some travel will be required, for example visiting ranges / proving grounds as well as multi (UK) site working and collaboration with project partners.

The role

Lead the design and technical delivery of various aspects of land autonomy software stack

Delivery of technical work to time, cost and quality in accordance with project requirements

Contribute to the development of the technical strategy for the Land Autonomous programme and improvement methods, tools and processes.

Provide support to business development and sales as required

Stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. Evaluate third party products / components and give recommendations on their best utilisation within our platforms and solutions. Become a recognised subject matter expert leading team members to creative and innovative solutions for complex autonomy challenges.

To develop and mentor team members to meet the current and future needs of the business. This particularly involves working with graduates.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • You must hold an Electrical, Electronic or Communication Engineering qualification or equivalent;
  • Proven ability to design, integrate and deliver land autonomous systems.
  • At least 5 years of recent proven experience delivering autonomous systems, market understanding and a credible track record in autonomy.
  • Excellent understanding of the mechanical, electrical, sensing, actuation and behavioural elements of a land autonomous vehicle.
  • Experience in developing solutions in line with ROS (Robotic Operating System) 1.0 and 2.0. and an interest in further development of ROS for military environment.
  • You will need to be a proactive leader who wants to work as a team/collaborate.
  • Chartered Engineer or Mathematician is desirable.
