About the role
We are currently looking for a Product Design Engineer to join our Drug Delivery Systems Division as a member of the Device Development group. in.
Location - Loughborough

Overall Mission
The Device Development group designs, evolves, analyses and commercialises mechanical and electromechanical inhaler technologies as part of the inhalation drug delivery center of excellence. The group supports both the novel inhalation drug delivery devices as well as updating and maintaining commercialised products.

Job Responsibilities
Design and development of drug delivery devices

    • Device ideation and concept generation
    • Detailed design
    • 3rd party supplier design analysis
    • Sourcing, manufacture and assembly of prototypes
    • Failure modes and design sensitivity activities
    • Theoretical component and product assessment (e.g. CFD, FEA)
    • Manufacturing data and drawing generation and updates

Device assessment

    • Visual and dimensional assessments
    • Functional testing
    • Data analysis
    • Non-destructive and destructive investigation techniques
    • Manage early-stage usability studies
    • Clinical trial preparation and support


    • Market and competitor analysis
    • Voice of Customer
    • Patent research and review


    • Risk assessment and mitigation using Design Controls processes
    • Simple end-to-end project management of multiple projects
    • Work with external manufacturing partners and other suppliers
    • Time management

Knowledge & Skill

  • Proven experience in designing and developing medical devices (such as metered dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, soft mist inhalers, nebulisers, injectors, diagnostics, patient monitoring) and/or working to ISO13485. Advanced use of industry standard 3D CAD and 2D drawing packages such as PTC Creo, Siemens NX, or SolidWorks
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate creative design skills and logically solve technical briefs.
  • All design work should be based on and accompanied by a solid engineering understanding.
  • Experience in developing plastic injection moulded components and enclosures for mass manufacture.
  • An understanding of integrating mechanical systems with electronics and software would be beneficial although not a requirement.

Working knowledge of:

  • Medical device guidelines
  • Design Controls.
  • Design verification guidelines
  • Valid UK driving license preferred, but not essential

2:1 or higher degree level or equivalent (PhD, MSc, MA, MEng, BA, BEng or BSc) from an IMechE recognised institute in Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Development and Manufacture Engineering.
