I am recruiting an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to work for a FTSE 250 Engineering Support Services Organisation in Bristol. This role functions within their Marine and Technology Division, which provides vital engineering services to key clients, such as the Royal Navy. The business unit is going through a massive period of growth and over the next three to five years will move from being a £100m business with circa 800 staff to a £200m business with 1100 staff.


  • Engagement with customers to develop and agree statement of requirements.
  • Manage risk within the project lifecycle.
  • Application of first principles to novel problems.
  • Objectively assess different design options.
  • Produce design documentation in support of project lifecycle.
  • Preparing and checking design documentation as required to time, cost and quality.
  • Authorisation of design documentation as required.
  • Substantiation of design against requirements.
  • Undertake role of Technical Authority in accordance with Governance Policy.
  • Chair and/or contribute to design reviews.
  • Specification, selection and/or management of external suppliers as required.
  • Provide practical engineering solutions to problems discovered during design implementation.
  • Managing bid responses.
  • Representing group and/or department as required.
  • Management of multi discipline engineering and design teams to time, cost and quality.
  • Develop new and existing processes and procedures, across health and safety, and engineering.
  • Undertake independent investigations.
  • Train and develop self and others.

Required Experience

  • Engineering degree or comparable academic standard, in relevant discipline.
  • To hold or be eligible to hold, Chartered Engineer status.
  • Membership of relevant professional engineering body.
  • Practical knowledge and experience within Mechanical Engineering.
  • Ability to work within complex multi discipline teams.
  • Produce unambiguous statement of requirements.
  • Development of design solutions, substantiated against statement of requirement.
  • Experience of design approaches throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ability to objectively assess different solutions against acceptance criteria.
  • IT capable; Office, CAD, appropriate analytical software.
