Optical Design Engineer (Novel Laser Systems)


The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Optical Design Engineer to join a leading Global Defence Technology & Security organisation. You will work within the Applied Sciences business unit based at one of their sites in Hampshire or Worcestershire.


You will be a part of the High Energy Laser (HEL) team within the Disruptive Technologies division and, through your experience of the design of optical systems will be actively involved in delivering designs and hardware relating to novel laser systems.

  • Advise on the optical design aspects of novel laser and optical systems including beam control & safety considerations
  • Undertake technical tasks relating to HEL related research. This will include system and sub-system design activities
  • Track demands on your time and provide continuous communication of current and future projected workload to your line manager

Requirements & Essential Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge or experience in optical design of systems/sub-systems
  • Engineering/Technical/Scientific expertise through an appropriate technical experience or qualifications.
  • Both a theoretical and practical knowledge of optical design with experience in professional standard optical design tools such as Zemax, and related 3D engineering or modelling packages.
  • Understanding of issues affecting choice and design of optical materials, coatings on optics, connectors, mounting and tolerancing
  • Experience of research programmes involving modelling, experiment and trials
  • Experience of working with laboratory test and measurement equipment/instrumentation
  • Experience in optical and laser system design, theoretical and practical safety analysis using Matlab, Excel or similar
  • Some experience in laser optics at kW level, preferably including fibre lasers, beam quality management and opto/thermomechanical effects

Security Clearance

If successful, you will be put through Ministry of Defence security clearance.
