Role: Network Architect

Start Date: mid-April

Duration: 3 months, with likelihood of a further 3 months

Location: Exeter - Remote working due to Covid 19

The Network Architect will be considered one of the customers's 'Capability Architect' roles, alongside Infrastructure, Integration, Security and Data. The capability architects have SME status in their domain and are charged with maintaining oversight, governance and adherence to strategy of all architectural change in their domain. Project interventions are expected but project interactions are mainly handled by one of a team of Solution Architects.

Main purpose of the job

The Network Architect role works closely with the architect community and is responsible for designing the University's communication networks, including LANs, WANs, VPNs, wireless, and closed networks, and support the transformation to a data driven and integrated IT service organisation.

Qualifications & attainment

  • Educational attainment at degree level (or demonstrable equivalent experience)
  • JNCIP or equivalent such as CCNP
  • JNCDS or equivalent such as CCDP

Knowledge & skills

  • In-depth knowledge of cabling, routers, hubs, firewalls and wireless access points
  • Expert in network segmentation and VLANs
  • Broad understanding of current and upcoming network technology landscape and concepts
  • Proven communication skills demonstrating ability to understand complex conceptual ideas and experience in conveying information to senior stakeholders
  • Proven ability in assessing and managing risks
  • Proven ability to interact across cross-functional and technical working teams and build ongoing relationships to ensure effective communications and exchange of information.
  • Proven ability to take independent decisions without reference to your line manager relating to significant events, or influence decision-making that impacts resourcing and future business planning of the service.
  • Good planning and organisation skills.
  • Excellent methodical, analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and problem-solving skills

Prior Experience

  • Recent experience of designing networks to meet business requirements in a commercial environment, demonstrating business acumen, balancing financial, quality, people and customer expectations
  • Experience of the full project life cycle
  • Experience in the identification and proactive mitigation of risks
  • Ability to build and develop relationships with peers and stakeholders to ensure effective exchange of information to support day-to-day work using existing practices.
  • Proven experience of managing relationships, evidencing ability to break down barriers and building beneficial working relationships
  • Demonstrate experience of the review and diagnosis and successful delivery of solutions to complex problems in a measured and creative way, demonstrating the ownership of issues and opportunities.
  • Proven experience of undertaking complex analysis, using different methodologies, and providing reports and management information with supporting commentary.
  • Provide training, coaching, mentoring and guide others on specific tasks, giving guidance and feedback based on own knowledge or experience.
  • Proactive personal and professional development including completion of mandatory training, skills courses and specialist training.

Desirable

  • Experience of optimising LAN and WAN network throughput using hardware and software
  • Deep knowledge of the OSI and TCP/IP (v4 & v6) stacks
  • Experience of delivering customer focused and service centric network architecture artefacts
  • Experience of cloud networking across AWS, Azure and Google
  • Experience of vendor evaluation
  • Experience of working in a Design, Develop, Operate environment
  • Experience of Prince2 and other project management methodologies.
  • Experience of working in an Agile DevOps environment
