Manufacturing Manager - Whetstone, Leicestershire

A brand new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a charismatic and experienced Manufacturing Manager to join a FTSE 100 Organisation based in Leicester.

Role summary

Whetstone is a strategic manufacturing and assembly facility. The manufacturing business stream delivers key manufacturing projects for a range of clients. Projects range from large fabrication projects to bespoke safety critical systems for Nuclear Generation. It has a well-established position within the industry, with a track record of providing goods satisfying high specifications and safety requirements. All manufactured items fully meet the stringent quality and long term integrity requirements demanded by the industry. The works has a present turnover of approximately £8M and employs 60 personnel.

The successful candidate, reporting to the Director of Technical Services, will take responsibility for the P&L operation of the manufacturing facility, ensuring key strategic financial objectives are achieved and ensuring a works culture consistent with the company principles of Safety, People and Performance.

This role is senior position and as such the key attributes of the successful candidate will include:

  • An authoritative, persuasive and confident leader able to act strategically and tactically willing to engage and motivate at all levels within the organisation.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop relationships and maintain an effective team.
  • Robust and demonstrable commercial awareness, results orientated with a team-centred approach.

Role responsibilities

  • Provide visible leadership, direction and guidance.
  • P&L responsibility for the operation, ensuring the financial and cost controls result in effective, timely and accurate monitoring of manufacturing performance.
  • Continually review health and safety practices and drive for ever increasing levels of safety culture.
  • Implement annual and medium term plans and budgets to meet financial objectives.
  • Ensure that all contracts are correctly planned, executed to best practice, delivered on time and to agreed budget.
  • Direct and control operations to ensure achievement of safety and environmental targets, agreed budgets and profit objectives.
  • Use lean manufacturing techniques as appropriate.
  • Optimisation of critical assets and mitigation of obsolescence issues, including robust maintenance programmes.
  • Establish and maintain existing relationships with key customers in order to support and enhance Whetstone's market placement and reputation.


The successful applicant should have the following:

  • Qualification in relevant manufacturing/engineering discipline
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, fabrication and lean techniques advantageous
  • Safety qualification
  • Experience of successful delivery of manufacturing projects.
  • Sound financial & contract understanding - preferably previous P&L responsibility
  • Negotiation, communication and influencing skills.
  • Sound commercial awareness and customer service skills.
  • Leadership and change management
