Interaction Designer

Job Description:

This is a chance to work on a service that matters, with people who value design and your chance to create work you're proud of. We're looking for an interaction designer to join the project team delivering a new digital system. The project is in the alpha phase and you will need to build on earlier prototypes to design a service that is simple for users. You will need to be comfortable working in a broad project team comprising the contracted supplier, the project lead, user researcher, developer, other designers and policy officials. You will have experience with and be comfortable working with agile development teams and will help to shape a user centred culture.

The Role:

  • As a designer, you'll determine how users interact with our services, the overall user journey and individual design elements.
  • You will work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, user centred services. You'll design accessible services, simple enough for everyone to use.
  • You will have experience of designing in an agile environment and want to help government transform the way it delivers services, so that they are simpler, faster and easier to use.
  • You will be digital-minded: applying the culture, practices, processes and technologies of the internet-era to respond to people's raised expectations.
  • As a designer, you'll make design decisions based on user needs, informed by research.
  • You'll be confident leading the design process in a multi-disciplinary team, and in collaborating with designers across the end client to contribute to their cross-government design system.

  • Understand user needs and how to design services that meet them − design user-centred interfaces and transaction flows − create and iterate prototypes to test and communicate ideas
  • Work with user researchers and developers to turn concepts into user centred services − collaborate on designs with others in a multidisciplinary team − ensure that the design of services is consistent with our website − explain design decisions and support a service at a service assessment − encourage constructive criticism of your work and constructively review the work of others − contribute to cross government design patterns and standards
  • Be an active part of a community of designers at the end client and across our business

Skills and Experience:

  • GDS experience required
  • Have a good understanding of interaction and user interface design
  • Understand how form and function work together
  • Experience of sketching and prototyping
  • Be able to talk about design and ideas in a way that other people understand
  • Understand how to work with user research
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to design accessible, responsive user interfaces
  • Have some knowledge of how the internet works
  • Have a basic understanding of typograph
  • Know how to design accessible, secure, responsive user interfaces
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced agile environment
  • Making effective decisions
  • Collaborating and partnering

Suitable candidates should submit their CV in the first instance.
