Head of Network Engineering


£60,000-£80,000 + Excellent Benefits

An exciting new position has developed, to join one of our high profile clients as the Head of Network Engineering who can be based from a number of locations in London/ The North West.

Given the complexity and sensitivity of our clients environment and their ambition to build world-class infrastructure and platforms to underpin the large scale transformation agenda they are pursuing, it is critical the Head of Network Engineering has direct and relevant experience in the technology, design and technical aspects of the modern network and security platforms that they are working with today.

The role requires a strong leader to ensure that they can build a resilient team with high levels of technical ability. The role has the remit to develop, design and construct a team to design, deliver and innovate our use of network technology to secure and provide critical national systems to ensure the UK is safe and secure.

Essential Criteria

Leadership Criteria

  • Strong technical leadership qualities; a passion for designing leading-edge systems and the ability to inspire a culture of technical excellence and innovative solution design.
  • Proven background is technical leadership in the relevant field
  • Great partnership skills: in particular the ability to build strong effective partnerships with peers across the technology organisation
  • Experience of working with 3rd party suppliers through contract bid, negotiation, grant and delivery phases
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written, and a good understanding of the use of different channels and formats for different audiences
  • Ability to demonstrate, build and manage a diverse team across multiple locations
  • Act as the technical authority for Network Services
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of staff performance in support of business and/or technical requirements
  • Experience managing Human Resource activities, including interviewing, selection / hiring, and conducting performance assessments

Technical Criteria

  • Demonstrate a deep technical understanding of the design and engineering of network services to support a highly automated strategy and deliver to critical national infrastructure
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of network and security services, and a strong preference for the leverage of commodity integrated market products wherever technical and security considerations allow to drive automation and security across the network space
  • Evidence a strong track record of managing complex technology projects within time, cost and quality targets
  • Define and manage Network Services technical roadmap and strategy
  • Responsibility for design, build and technical quality of network teams
  • Strong Cisco (Routers, Switches, Nexus, ISE, ASA), Checkpoint, Juniper, Palo Alto and Fortigate Firewalls as examples
  • Detailed knowledge of Routing protocols, TCP/IP suite and strong analytical skills (MPLS, VPLS, BGP, OSPF)
  • Good knowledge of Wireless technologies, design and deployment (CAPWAP, EoIP, 802.1x, ISE, Cisco MSE)
  • Data centre design knowledge using the latest technologies, including cloud adoption and virtualisation.
