General Hand (Workshop)



The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a General Hand to join a leading Global Defence Technology & Security Organisation, based in Portsmouth.


The role requires the holder to conduct basic technical or engineering tasks without direct supervision.

After receiving training in a wide range of technical or engineering skills, the role holder will take responsibility for utilising these skills to perform basic tasks, complete basic engineering projects, at the required standard, without direct supervision.

The role will require the individual to conform to good HSE practice and be aware of their impact on the health and safety of others in the Sub-function they work in.

The candidate must be able to assist with all aspects of the following:

  • Hand Fitting
  • Turning
  • General Workshop Machining
  • Welding MIG & ARC
  • Soldering and Brazing
  • Chilled water installation, repair & maintenance.


  • Successful completion of a relevant Technology or Engineering discipline, a BTEC or NVQ at Level 3.
  • You must show the aptitude to learn how to perform a wide range of increasingly complex technical or engineering skills.
  • You must be able to Work Confined space work when required to do so
  • You must be able to Work at heights when required to do so
