Development Team Lead - 6 months - Osterley, West London

Data Services Department

The Technology Data Services team are responsible for a variety of enterprise technologies that support our client's Corporate Information. The team is made up of people that are integral to the client's Information Systems.

Our client leads the way in many areas of technology, from delivering daily business critical corporate reports, to providing an elite data science and analytics platform for hundreds of users providing key insights on customers, products and content. Delivering solutions for new products and initiatives is what we do, every single day.

Purpose of the role

The Development Team Lead forms a crucial part of the Business Intelligence Team and acts as a bridge between local management and the development community. A highly accomplished technical expert, they look to impart their knowledge to their team and ensure that all work carried out is of the highest quality.

Key Tasks

  • Delivering excellent production quality code as well as encouraging and mentoring other developers to do the same
  • Facilitate and enforce peer reviews of all code produced by developers
  • Promoting the production of reusable code and modules where appropriate with a view to maximising effort and reducing development costs applying principles of Agile delivery where appropriate
  • Liaising closely with other BI team members and subject matter experts to ensure that accurate and effective support documentation is maintained to reflect code development and changes
  • Ensuring that risks and issues are identified in a timely manner and effectively communicated proposed resolution and mitigation strategies to the Delivery Manger or assigned Scrum Master.
  • Working within both analysis and test driven development environments showing an excellent understanding of specification documents or test plans
  • Being proactive in the identification of opportunities to rationalise application across the whole BI team, working in close collaboration with other BI team member and subject matter experts
  • Proactively and positively challenge the status quo and searches for continual improvements to processes and ways of working
  • Ensure all staff members hit capex targets and that any variance is challenged and understood
  • Carry out and document monthly PDPs discussions with developers
  • Maintain competency framework for developers and ensure they are progressing in their technical ability
  • Help to build a positive team environment within direct reports and wider team
  • Positively manage change within team and wider department and minimises, to ensure change is adopted with the minimum of noise and concern
  • Regularly assess own technical ability against peers and ensure progress in ability and skillset.

Key Competencies

  • In depth understanding of Business Intelligence best practice and principles
  • Experience of integration projects on a large scale environment(s)
  • Proven experience of development and support in the context of complex BI systems
  • Proven experience of ETL and DW technical design, development and support
  • Excellent SQL skills
  • Experience or Expertise in any of the following technologies
    • Cloud technologies
    • Big Data
    • Spark
    • Scala
    • Hadoop
    • Netezza
    • Unix scripting
    • Ab Initio
    • Agile Methodology
  • A proven ability to influence technical decisions in a fast moving commercial environment

Interfaces and Reporting

The DTL reports directly to the Development Manager

Their main points of interface will be with the following positions;
