Location: Newport (Travel to Fawley required)

Description

The Desktop Support Engineer will join our Client's Customer Experience team who is responsible for providing all desk-side support (both in an IT solution Centre drop in Centre and desk side) for users as well as hands and eyes support for infrastructure (servers, network, printers/MFDs, audio-visual equipment) at Newport and Newport supported remote sites.

Job Purpose

The Desktop Support Engineer will be responsible for the desk-side IT services for users including provision of equipment, network connectivity and resolution of problems. The role also includes "hands and eyes" support for the IT infrastructure at the site including network services, servers, storage and backup devices. In addition, they are expected to: interface directly with the business in relation to service provision and internally with the Client as necessary and provide assistance in the resolution of complex technical problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Site Services Supervisor, however may receive day-to-day guidance from the Solution Centre Coordinator.
  • Installation, moves and decommissioning of desk equipment (workstations, docking stations, monitors, local printers, peripherals, network printers and MFDs).
  • Break/fix support for desktop equipment (desk-side and in the IT Solution Centre).
  • Staging, racking, installation, set-up and patching of IT infrastructure such as servers, network, storage devices and audio-visual equipment.
  • Hands and eyes break/fix support for IT infrastructure equipment.
  • Liaising with global IT support teams to commission/decommission infrastructure equipment and to resolve desk-side and infrastructure issues.
  • Liaising with vendors and manufacturers to resolve hardware issues.
  • Using the company provided IT systems for incident, change and work order administration, and inventory management.
  • Performing tape backup and restore support, physical tape management and related offsite storage coordination activities
  • May be required to work for projects outside core hours (i.e. evenings or weekends) on an ad-hoc basis
  • Manual handling is a part of the job function.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Assist with PC installs / moves related to office moves.
  • Ad-hoc small work items or project work such as supporting the rollout of new technology. This would be primarily at Newport, however could include other supported remote sites.
  • Provide backup cover for the Newport Plant (holiday and sickness cover).
  • May be required to perform out-of-hours hands-and-eyes on-call support for infrastructure equipment (servers and network) located at Newport (in a shared Rota).

  • Work is primarily reactive and driven by user requests and problems
  • Routine tasks such as daily checks and backup-tape handling
  • Project work requests
  • Regular team meetings

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Valid UK Driving License
  • Total commitment to safety (own and others)
  • Good working knowledge of intel-based PC hardware and MS-Windows 7, 8 and 10 OS
  • Good working knowledge of MS-Office products including Outlook
  • Working knowledge of servers and network equipment (including network patching)
  • Familiarity with audio visual technology and Xerox multi-function devices would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with back-up technology would be an advantage
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in virtual teams and resolve complex problems by working with people remote to and from Newport. Ability to work with 3rd parties
  • Flexibility to change work priorities according to business needs

Key Measures:

  • Incident and Work Order ticket handling performance.
  • Project work items completed on time and to a high standard.

Training:

  • Safety Training including the Loss Prevention System, Manual handling and Ergo Training.
