Data Scientist
Purpose of the role

  • The key purpose of the role is to direct the creation of the businesses data science capability. Establishment of a cross-functional, enterprise-wide approach and culture for data science. Will support the Data Architect with the provision of the organisation's data science capabilities. Leads the organisation's commitment to efficient and effective analysis of information.
  • Develops analytics policy, standards and guidelines. Establishes and manages analytics methods, scientific techniques and capabilities to enable the organisation to analyse data, to generate insights, create value and drive decision-making. Sets direction and leads the introduction and use of analytics to meet overall business requirements, ensuring consistency across all user groups.
  • Identifies and establishes the veracity of the external sources of information which are relevant to the operational needs of the enterprise.
  • Sets research goals, makes effective proposals for the investment of funds in research projects, and authorises research proposals submitted by others. Leads strategic/interdisciplinary research projects. Maintains up to date knowledge of relevant research work and emerging technology trends. Maintains a strong external network and takes a leading part in professional activities outside own employing organisation.


Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Knowledge - Apply scientific approach to available business data . Understand how Data related technologies can be leveraged to help achieve the IT strategy.
  • Support - Assist and be responsible for governance through Technical Design Authority to ensure solutions are implemented in-line with the data strategy and deliver data artefacts of sufficient quality to meet analytical needs
  • Continuous Improvement - Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders to formulate and assess ideas for new and improved solutions, products and approaches, providing input into prioritisation, impact analysis, estimates and scheduling. Validate predictive models continue to provide effective decision support.
  • Change Analysis - Support the Data Architect in performing analysis of business requirements to generate architectural designs for new and amended Data solutions - ensuring canonical data needs to support predictive modelling across systems are considered.
  • Change Delivery - Design and support implementation of predictive models to deliver enhanced business insight across Risk: Underwriting, Decision support, Capital Adequacy including Probability of default, Exposure at default and Loss Given Default Sales and Marketing: Client Journey, Campaign analysis, Client Profiling Operations: Client retention and debtor insights.
  • Change Documentation - Ensure that all designs are in line with agreed architectural standards, policies, principles and project artefacts.
  • Testing Support - Support the testing and verification of all Data solutions to ensure that requirements have been met, and predictive models are effective within agreed tolerances.
  • Standards and Governance - Support development of standards, processes, quality and performance criteria for Data solutions to ensure consistency across the environment.
  • Strategic Direction - Work with the data architect and other members of the architecture and operations team to create and maintain a strategic roadmap for Data solutions.
  • Any other duties or projects commensurate with the level of responsibility of this role, for which the role holder has the necessary experience and/or training.


Key knowledge and experience
Essential knowledge and experience

  • Strong academic background with Masters or above- postdoc/research experience desirable or extensive commercial data related experience 5-10 years.
  • Data Science and predictive modelling
  • Knowledge/experience of RDBMS, such as SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL
  • T-SQL, R, MDX, DAX languages
  • Extensive experience with in at least some of the following:
    • Business Intelligence and Analytics
    • Data Quality and Data Governance
    • Data Integration and Architecture
  • Understand the differences between IaaS, PaaS and SaaS solutions


Desirable knowledge/experience
Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • NoSQL and Big Data technologies
  • Architectural Experience
  • Some working experience of Visual Studio or other development environment


Qualifications:

  • Formal Data Science Qualification
  • TOGAF certified
  • Microsoft Data Platform or BI Certification
