Data Analyst

3 Months - (Potential for contract - permanent role)

The client continues to invest in growing the Results business, which is a market leader in the Assessment and Data Services field. The business is built upon industry-leading solutions designed to meet the demands for Educational Performance Data and Analysis services and e-Marking/e-Testing services.

The Results Data Services cover the complete data lifecycle, from elaborating client requirements for new performance measures and indicators, the collection and cleansing of data, to the delivery of high integrity data view and reporting services, which support policy and decision making.

The timely and high quality production and processing of this data is of key importance to our customers.

JOB PURPOSE

  • Support the operational execution and the overall quality output required by the Results data clients.
  • Work with Project and Development departments to ensure the successful delivery of customer requested changes to the products and services.
  • Assist colleagues to manage the process for clarifying scope and details of requirements with clients.
  • Identify, document and execute effective means to quality assure data from receipt through to final output.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risk.
  • Support new business development by ensuring delivery of the appropriate data outputs to the required quality for new or pilot projects.
  • Hold knowledge of the educational data landscape along with some expertise in data and statistical analysis.
  • Have an understanding of the educational data, which relates to the sectors in which the clients Results operates.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (% time spent)

Requirements Analysis (20%)

Help ensure requirements are specified and agreed by wider delivery teams for both existing and new projects. To enable this the jobholder will maintain an understanding of the processes and business rules which are applied to data through the systems and services that the clients Results provides to its customers.

Cycle Delivery (60%)

Delivery of data and interactive deliverables to time, quality and cost for both existing and new services.

Process Improvement (20%)

Drive continuous improvement through which data quality and timely delivery can be improved throughout the data delivery cycle.

FACTS & FIGURES

Assists the technical delivery to time, quality and cost within a portfolio of services representing a turnover of £7M a year.

Work within a team of up to three data analysts to deliver projects to time, quality and cost.

DECISION MAKING

Qualifications/ Technical Skills Required

Essential:

  • Degree level qualification
  • Ability to use SQL or general purpose tools to interrogate databases and calculate statistical outputs.
  • Understanding of statistics
  • Understanding of formal test methodologies (e.g. V-model, Agile, Waterfall)
  • Understanding of ITIL v3 best practices
  • Solid numerical abilities
  • Evidence of knowledge of the Educational data landscape
  • Basic data domain knowledge in education e.g. different types of establishments, subjects, types of qualification, i.e. data dimensions (age, gender, level of qualifications)
  • Understanding of the meaning of basic descriptive statistics - average, mean, median, percentiles etc.
  • Ability to sense check figures based on an understanding of how data relates to the real world e.g. identifying, querying and investigating variations in measures from year to year to explain why they have occurred.
  • Ability to test and analyse what might have gone wrong if figures do not make sense

Desirable:

  • Degree level qualification in a numerical discipline
  • Negotiating and influencing

  • Intermediate level of data literacy
  • Understanding of more advanced statistical terms - regression, confidence intervals and significance, clustering / statistical families.
  • Understanding of analysing data from surveys (weightings, standard errors)
  • Ability to construct and test more complex hypothesis of what might have gone wrong if figures do not make sense
  • Basic understanding of fuzzy matching learner records from multiple systems where a common identifier is not present.

Work experience

Essential:

A background, which includes experience in at least two of the following:

  • Quality assuring data presented through online systems or as data outputs, which involve complex business rules in their calculation
  • Working with educational data to produce statistical outputs
  • Working with large, public sector, datasets
