Assistant Welding Engineer
Up to £35,000 per annum

I am recruiting an experienced Welder/Welding Engineer to work for a FTSE 250 Engineering Support Services Organisation in Bristol. This role functions within their Marine and Technology Division which provides vital engineering services to key clients, such as the Royal Navy.

You will be working within a large production facility on high profile marine defence contracts using large components. This position is aimed at providing a valuable hands-on learning environment for an experienced welder to gain the necessary experience to progress their qualification into specialist technical engineering roles.


  • To assist with the development of weld procedure specifications, PQR's and other supporting documentation that satisfies the Contract specification and national / international standards.
  • Develop technical competency through hands-on experience and formal technical qualification/training.
  • Responsible for monitoring and supporting the control of appropriately qualified welders.
  • Help develop welding processes, techniques and procedures
  • Management of production welding surveillance activities
  • To assist with the review, comment on, and approval of welding / fabrication / materials and metallurgical related supplier documentation as necessary and appropriate
  • To carry out any other welding control and/or quality related duties as requested by and agreed with the Welding Engineer or Welding Engineering Manager
  • Upholding the company's policies for Compliance (Quality, Health, Safety and the Environment).

Required Skills and Experience / Qualifications:

  • Educated to a minimum level of HNC in a welding discipline or hold equivalent level of technical expertise.
  • Capable of developing technical competency to degree/MSc level
  • Ideally hold IWT/EWT status
  • Demonstration of good basic understanding of welding engineering theory and welding documentation.
  • Knowledge of common welding processes and inspection activities
  • Able to read and understand detailed technical drawings and written specifications, codes and standards etc.
  • Good general communication and computing skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Self-starting individual with high degree of ambition to succeed in furthering technical welding career.
  • Strong sense of accountability and willingness to take responsibility for technical decisions
  • Understanding of NDT techniques and acceptance criteria e.g. Visual, Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Radiography and Ultrasonics is highly desirable
